Undergo Gallstone Surgery, These Causes and Symptoms Need to be Recognized!

What are the causes, signs and symptoms of gallstones? Come on!

Definition of Gallstones

Gallstones or cholelithiasis are pieces of solid material that form in the gallbladder, a small organ below the liver. They range in size from a grain of sand to the size of a golf ball.

Many people are often unaware of the signs before the gallstones block the bile ducts and cause pain and require treatment.

Causes of Gallstones

Launching the Mayo Clinic, doctors say it's not clear what causes gallstones to form, but there are several possible causes for gallstones, including the following:

1. Bile contains too much cholesterol

Usually bile contains enough chemicals to dissolve the cholesterol released by the liver. However, if the liver secretes more cholesterol than bile can dissolve, this excess cholesterol can form crystals and eventually become stones.

2. Bile contains too much bilirubin

Bilirubin is a chemical that is produced when the body breaks down red blood cells. Certain conditions cause the liver to have too much bilirubin, including liver cirrhosis, bile duct infections and certain blood disorders. This condition of excess bilirubin contributes to the formation of gallstones.

3. The gallbladder does not empty properly

If the gallbladder does not empty completely or frequently enough, the bile can become very concentrated and lead to gallstones.

Types of Gallstones

There are two types of gallstones, which are as follows:

Cholesterol stones. These are usually yellow-green, generally making up 80 percent of gallstones.

Pigment stone. It is smaller and darker, made of bilirubin.
