5 Famous Mysterious Stories about the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is one of the most mysterious places on Earth. Located off the southeastern coast of the US in the Atlantic Ocean, between Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico, the region is at the center of unsolved mysteries.

Covering an area of 440,000 nautical miles, the Bermuda Triangle is part of a busy shipping route and is crossed by ships bound for the Americas, Europe and the Caribbean every day.

This location also makes it one of the components of the Earth's surface that is interesting to study, but full of puzzles. Over the centuries, many ships and planes were reported to have mysteriously disappeared in the region. The Devil's Triangle is also thought to be responsible for the disappearance of thousands of people in recent decades.

Among the many mysterious stories about this area. There are at least five famous stories about the following Bermuda Triangle, as quoted by us from Marine Insight.

1. Mary Celeste

Mary Celeste was found on December 4, 1872 with everything in its place except the entire crew. The ship was found stranded at sea a few days after starting its journey from New York to Genoa, Italy.

There were seven crew members and Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, and their two-year-old daughter on board. When a passing British ship called the Dei Gratia found the Mary Celeste off the Azores Islands, the ship was unmanned, the lifeboats also missing.

It was also found that the nine barrels in the cargo hold were empty, and there was a sword on the deck. There was no trace of outsiders on the ship. The lost lifeboat was never found either.

The study of the ship's disappearance ruled out the possibility of a pirate attack as everything on this ship, including the alcohol barrels transported and the crew's valuables, was intact.

Theories surrounding the Mary Celeste mystery also include a possible criminal conspiracy, alien abduction, and even a giant squid attack. The possibility of a natural disaster is also included in the list. Many have speculated the role of an underwater earthquake behind the crash.

However, the various speculations circulating seem unreasonable. Many also ask, why did a highly skilled crew, on a good weather day, with a ship in good condition, just leave it and never show up again?

2. Ellen Austin

In 1881, Ellen Austin sailed to New York from London, but later they found a schooner or other sailing ship abandoned near the Bermuda Triangle. The ship looked fine, drifting north of the Sargasso Sea, but the crew was missing.

Baker's captain, Ellen Austin, asked to observe the abandoned ship for two days to make sure it wasn't a trap. After two days of no response, the captain entered the ship with his crew to investigate further and there was no sign of the crew.

To pull him back with Ellen Austin, the captain puts several crew on board, preparing to set sail together. However, after two days of sailing in calm waters, a storm separated the course of the two ships, which then disappeared.

A few days after the storm, Captain Baker through his binoculars could see the ship drifting aimlessly away once again. Finally, after hours of trying, Ellen Austin was able to catch up to the ship.

Another version of the story, tells of Captain Baker's second attempt to bring the ship back ashore, but ends with the same fate before Ellen Austin finally gives up and abandons the doomed ship.

The disappearance of the ship, then suddenly reappearing, and the absence of a crew on the ship, becomes an interesting story. The ship has until recently been the secret of the Bermuda Triangle, which seems inexplicable.

3. USS Cyclops

The loss of the USS Cyclops, one of the Navy's largest fuel vessels, marks the largest loss of life in US Navy history in a single incident.

In March 1918, this large ship departed from Brazil for Baltimore via the Bermuda Triangle region carrying 10,800 tonnes of manganese ore with about 309 crew members. Departing on a pretty good day, this ship showed no problems.

But then, mysteriously the news of the ship was never heard from again. An entire search in the area was carried out, but nothing was found. No remains of the ship or crew members were ever found.

The captain of the USS Cyclops never sent a distress signal, and no one aboard responded to radio calls from other ships in the vicinity.

Naval investigators also failed to pinpoint the exact cause of the ship's disappearance, although there are a number of theories suggesting various reasons.

Due to a mysterious disappearance, the Cyclops became part of a list of more than 100 ships and planes that disappeared strangely in the Bermuda Triangle.

4. Carroll A. Deering

The Carroll A. Deering, a five-masted commercial sailing ship, is one of the most written maritime mysteries of the 20th century. On January 31, 1921, Carroll A. Deering was found aground in the treacherous rocks of Hatteras Diamond Shoals, North Carolina.

There is speculation that the vessel was involved in rum-running or an illegal business of smuggling alcoholic beverages where such transportation is prohibited by law.

However, when the investigative team from Barbados reached the ship after days of rough seas, they only found the ship empty with all crew members missing along with the crew's personal belongings, ship navigation equipment, logbook, and rescue boat.

Often known as the "Ghost Ship of the Outer Banks", the disappearance of the Carroll A. Deering along with several other ships during the same time period in the Bermuda Triangle area, became valuable information for investigations in these mysterious waters. However, nothing can solve this mystery.

Reports show that as many as nine ships disappeared during this period from the same area. It is not known how they disappeared.

5. Witchcraft

On December 22, 1967, a cabin cruiser named Witchcraft left Miami with its captain Dan Burack and his friend, Pastor Patrick Horgan.

The two men's trip on a luxury yacht is to enjoy the beautiful view of Miami's Christmas lights. However, after reaching just a mile offshore, the coast guard received a call from the captain stating that his ship had hit something, but that there was no significant damage.

The coast guard immediately set off for the Witchcraft ship in 19 minutes alone. But once there, the search turned up nothing. The area indicating the ship's location was completely empty, with no sign of the ship being stranded or even having been there before.

What's most interesting about this story is that the cruiser is almost unsinkable, not to mention the many rescue devices that are on board, including life jackets, lifeboats, beacons, distress signal devices, and more. None of the objects were used, and the ship was lost.

Coastguard officers searched hundreds of square miles of ocean over the next few days but to no avail. This ship is not found to this day, lost and all that remains are the various speculations that accompany it.
