Canada Blocks Huawei and ZTE 5G Technology


Canada is the only member of the Five Eyes intelligence network that does not ban Huawei 5G devices in their country. But recently they announced plans to block 5G technology from Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp.

Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance consisting of a combination of countries from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

On the other hand, companies that use Huawei or ZTE 4G devices have until the end of 2027 to remove them.



In response to this, the Chinese government has expressed opposition to the decision with the country’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.


"We will take all necessary actions to protect the legitimate interests of Chinese companies."


A Chinese embassy spokesman accused Canada of working with the United States to put pressure on Chinese companies.


Alykhan Velshi, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Huawei said in an interview with Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that the company is still waiting to hear what kind of national security threats they think Huawei poses.


He added that Huawei still has 1,500 employees in Canada, mostly in research and development, and sells products such as mobile phones and will continue to do so.
