It's fun, Windows 11's default browser now has a free VPN

Microsoft is testing a new feature for the Edge browser called Secure Network, which is basically a VPN service from Cloudflare, and is available for free.

The addition of this VPN feature makes Edge even more feature-rich, which makes the browser even more capable, especially since it's been based on Chromium since 2019. In fact, its market share has overtaken Safari and become the second most popular browser.

The presence of this VPN feature is known from the support page, where Microsoft explains the new features that will be coming to Edge. Microsoft does not call this Secure Network a VPN, but what is clear is that it will be their advantage over Chrome.

Microsoft claims the feature will protect its users from being monitored by encrypting data traffic, as well as protecting the user's location by masking the user's IP address.

To be able to use this service, users must log in using a Microsoft account on Edge. That way, users get a free data quota of 1 GB. Yes, only 1 GB.

So far, Microsoft has not said whether there will be an option to pay a monthly fee to get a bigger quota or maybe unlimited, as quoted by Techspot, Monday (2/5/2022).

On the other hand, Cloudflare claims they will not store or sell any user data, and will delete all data related to a user's browsing session within 25 hours of use.

So far Secure Network is not yet publicly available, but will likely be available in the near future on Edge Canary or Dev.

Oh yes, for information, the presence of a VPN in this browser is not at all new. Opera has provided a VPN in the browser since 2016.
