The different fate of iPhone and Android cellphone sales in Q1 2022

Throughout the first quarter of this year, there was no spike in sales in the global mobile phone market. It's just that Apple is happy because iPhone sales have shot up, while Android has dropped.

According to IDC research results, users' reluctance to buy a new cellphone is gradually increasing. This resulted in a 8.9% decline in global HP sales compared to the same period last year.

According to the results of the first three months of this year, there were 314.1 million HP sold in the market. Meanwhile, from January to March last year, the number was 344.7 million units.

Among the reasons for the decline, IDC analysts pointed to supply issues, component shortages, unstable economic and geopolitical situation. It is estimated that the demand for HP fell the most in Central and Eastern Europe, a decline of up to 20%.

"The decline in sales in Q1 is expected, due to lack of supply and economic challenges and difficult year-on-year comparisons, things seem to have turned for the worse," said Nabila Popal, research director at IDC.

"Consumer sentiment across all regions, and especially China, is generally negative with major concerns about inflation and economic uncertainty reducing consumer spending. This, combined with rising transportation and component costs, and the recent lockdown in Shanghai exacerbated an already difficult situation. ."

In terms of sales by brand, Samsung continues to be the leader, accounting for 23.4% of the market in the first quarter of this year, equivalent to 73.6 million smartphones.

The second place belongs to Apple with 56.5 million iPhone units shipped and accounting for 18%. In the top three is Xiaomi, with an estimated 12.7% market share and 39.9 million units sold.

Oppo and Vivo are in fourth and fifth place. Both control the market as much as 8.7% and 8.1%. For full details in the table below:

The table shows that Apple continues to grow compared to last year. Meanwhile, all Android vendors have negative growth. This suggests that the iPhone's appeal is unaffected by factors such as the economy and the pandemic.
