This USB-C Cable Supports 240W Power!

After the standard was released some time ago by the USB Implementer Forum (USB-IF), now a new standard USB-C cable has finally been released to the market.

The cable was released by Club3D, and is the first USB-C cable that can deliver up to 240W of electrical power. Up from the previous maximum power of 'only' 100W.

There are three cables released by Club3D, first a 2m cable with 480Mbps bandwidth, then a 2m cable with 20Gbps bandwidth, and a 1m cable with 40Gbps bandwidth (USB4 Gen 3x2).

All of these cables support 240W of power, with a maximum current of 5A at 48V. This means that the cable will not be much thicker than an ordinary USB-C cable with a maximum current of 3A, as quoted by Techspot, Friday (6/5/2022).

But unfortunately, even though cables supporting 240W already exist, there are no devices on the market that support this new standard. By far one of the most power-delivering devices on the market is the MacBook Pro M1 Max charger adapter from Apple, with a maximum power of 140W.

However, this cable may be sold together with a gaming laptop, to replace the round connection commonly used in laptops with high-power chargers.

Currently, there are many laptops that use USB-C as a charger port. However, it is limited to laptops that use CPU and GPU with relatively low power consumption. Not a gaming laptop equipped with a power-hungry GPU like, for example, the RTX 3080.

So, in the future, gaming laptops with power-hungry GPUs will use the USB-C port for charging. Likewise with cellphones that can be charged with great power, for example Xiaomi which has shown 200W charging on cellphones. Also Oppo is showing off the latest SuperVOOC with 240W power.

The presence of this new standard USB-C will certainly be an interesting addition from the technology side. But in terms of ease of use, it will certainly add to the length of confusing standards that USB-C can provide.
