The development of genetic engineering has allowed scientists to "create" animals through laboratory experiments. Genetic engineering is a technique to produce new organisms or combinations for a specific purpose.
Examples of the advantages of genetic engineering include making soybeans bigger to increase profits, or livestock being made larger so that more meat is produced.
However, there are also genetic engineering products that have caused debate because they are considered unethical if done excessively. This goes against norms, culture, beliefs, and caring for animals.
Here are five animal species that were 'born' from genetic engineering.
1. Killer bee
This genetically modified killer bee is produced from a combination of European bees and African bees. The goal of genetic engineering was originally to increase honey production.
Instead of producing abundant honey, genetic engineering has actually given birth to bees with terrible defense systems. If one bee is disturbed, the entire bee colony will attack repeatedly and can kill.
2. Glofish
Glofish is a unique genetically modified fish that can glow in the dark. The purpose of this fish was to detect pollution in water. Because of their beautiful color, glofish are finally traded freely.
3. Transparent frog
Frogs are one of the animals that are commonly used as experimental experimental animals to study the inside of their bodies. A scientist from Japan then made the frog transparent through genetic engineering to make it easier to observe the inside of its body without surgery.
4. Super cow
In the 1800's, scientists from Belgium had the idea of crossing a native Belgian cow with a horned cow from England. They chose the biggest and strongest of the two types of cows.
Based on the results of this genetic engineering, a cow was born with a very large and muscular physique. This animal was then given the name Belgian Blue Cow or Belgian Blue Cow.
5. Dolly Sheep
Scientists succeeded in making cloned sheep from adult sheep cells and named Dolly in 1996. This success was obtained after conducting 277 experiments.
Cloning is a technique of making offspring with the same genetics as the parent without the process of marriage and fertilization. Although it could be said to be a successful clone, Dolly's sheep was sickly. Finally, Dolly's lamb was rested forever with a special injection fluid so as not to continue to feel pain.
