The planet Venus is one of the most interesting objects in the Solar System. The second planet closest to the Sun apparently has an interesting fact that is rarely known to many people.
Here are some strange and terrible facts about the planet which is often referred to as the Morning Star, quoted from Space:
1. There are Thousands of Volcanoes
There are more volcanoes on Planet Venus than on any other planet in our Solar System. There are at least 1,600 volcanoes on its surface and possibly many more, which are too small to be seen from Earth. Scientists say most of the volcanoes are probably dormant.
2. One Day Is Very Long
One day on Planet Venus is equivalent to 243 days on Planet Earth. That's the time it takes Venus to rotate. While a year on Venus, the period of revolution around the Sun is shorter, which is 224.7 Earth days.
3. Twin Earth
Of all the planets in the Solar System, Planet Venus is called the most Earth-like. The size is almost the same, as is the composition. Venus's orbit is closest to Earth. The two surface worlds are relatively young and also have thick atmospheres. But Venus' atmosphere is dominated by toxic sulfuric acid.
4. Incredible Heat
Because part of the atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide, an extreme greenhouse effect hits the surface of Venus. The temperature can penetrate 470 degrees Celsius so that it is impossible to land any vehicle there that can last a long time.
5. Extreme Pressure
The air pressure on the surface of the Planet Venus is also extreme, about 90 times higher than Earth. In other words, the air pressure on Venus is almost the same as the water pressure at a depth of 1 kilometer under the Earth's ocean.
6. Can Be Seen Through The Sun
Venus is one of the rare planets that humans can see as it passes in front of the Sun. Apart from Venus, only the Planet Mercury is also like that. Venus's transit across the Sun occurs when it passes between the Sun and Earth (or another planet), making it visible above the Sun as a black dot.
7. The Most Shining Planet
Although Venus is not the largest planet, its distance from Earth makes it the brightest planet when viewed from Earth. It is only less brilliant than the Moon. So bright that there was a case in 2011 where Air Canada pilots mistook it for a plane about to crash into it.
8. Curious Since Ancient Times
Venus has been observed for thousands of years. The ancient Babylonians tracked it in space in 1600 BC. Pythaforas was the first to find objects that were thought to be stars and appeared in the morning and evening were the same object, namely Venus.
9. Very Strong Wind
The wind howls on Venus at a very high speed. Recorded can reach 724 kilometers per hour. Thus, the wind speed there is more intense than the most powerful tornadoes on Earth.
