The government is currently planning to introduce an import tax on low value goods below RM500 purchased online, starting January 1, 2023.
For information, this matter is ready to be announced by the government through the last Budget 2022.
This introduction is in ensuring fair treatment between taxable goods manufactured in Malaysia, as well as imported goods sold online, and delivered by air courier.
Under this change, traders either from Malaysia or abroad who sell goods priced below RM500 to consumers in Malaysia will have to register and charge a sales tax of 10%.
With this move too, local traders will be better protected and offer a fairer market for all.
