No longer called Turkey, the country with a thousand uniqueness has officially changed its name to Turkiye, after previously submitting a letter to the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday (1/6).
The discourse of changing the name has been campaigned by the President of Turkey since last December as a form of rebranding with a newer image!
"Türkiye is the best representation and expression of the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish people," Erdogan said.
Turkey is not the first, there are also several other countries that have changed their names, including the following.
Dutch
The country of windmills was once known as Holland, which refers to two provinces that are famous for their tourism. As a result, the dominance of foreigners who came to Holland was too great so that the government decided to change the name and image of the country, to Holland or Netherland in English.
Sri Lanka
Behind its rich graphite, Sri Lanka has many records of colonization by Europeans from the Portuguese to the British who call this area Ceylon. Until 1972, Ceylon was no longer used and turned into Sri Lanka as a manifestation of the success of the community to be independent from foreign colonialism.
Thailand
Not because of colonial records from other countries, Thailand actually had to struggle to take power from the Siamese kingdom in the past. Reporting from the India Times page, the name Thailand was obtained after the coup event that succeeded in turning the system into a constitutional monarchy, so the word Thai was chosen which means "free people".
Taiwan
Still from an Asian country, Taiwan has also experienced a series of name changes. Known by the initial name Formosa which means beautiful island given by the Portuguese.
The name was later changed to Tayouan when the Dutch explored the island before changing it to become Taiwan.
Eswatini
Announced directly by King Mswati III on the 50th anniversary of independence, the country of Swaziland was renamed Eswatini in an attempt to break with its colonial past.
The word Swaziland itself was quoted from Deutsche Welle (DW) as an amalgamation of foreign languages, so the King tried to eliminate it.
Myanmar
The events of the killing of many people in the rebellion incident, became the beginning of the abandonment of the name Burma which changed to Myanmar. The desire to break away from the past was also influenced by the word Burma which at that time only referred to the most dominant race, so the name Myanmar was chosen to officially unite all ethnicities.
