Oppo Find X5 Pro Review: More Luxurious with Hasselblad Camera

Oppo has returned to enliven the Indonesian flagship mobile market with the Find X5 Pro. This phone brings many improvements in terms of features and specifications, including a camera in collaboration with Hasselblad.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro is here to replace the Find X3 Pro (the Find X4 variant is indeed abolished) and fills the premium flagship cellphone market above IDR 10 million which is increasingly competitive even though there are still few fighters.

So what is the performance of the Oppo Find X5 Pro, and is it worth the exorbitant price? Check out the full review below.

Design

The first impression of holding the Oppo Find X5 Pro is its luxurious and premium design. The curves in the body combined with a sturdy body make it comfortable to hold for a long time.

Oppo coated the back of the Find X5 Pro with ceramic, replacing the glass coating used in the Find X3 Pro. The variant that came to our editor was Glaze Black, but Oppo also offers a Ceramic White variant.

The ceramic layer behind it makes the Find X5 Pro body quite slippery, especially if the phone is placed on your lap making it easy to slip and fall. Fortunately, Oppo provides a silicone case with a matching matte finish that can be installed to protect the Find X5 Pro and make it more comfortable to hold.

The Find X5 Pro Glaze Black variant also has a glossy finish that can even be used to mirror. It does make it look more luxurious, but as a result, the back of the phone becomes a magnet for fingerprints and gets dirty easily.

The back of the Find X5 Pro still carries a unibody design like its predecessor with a camera module that is integrated into the back panel. The difference is, this camera module now has an asymmetrical box shape, more or less like a trapezoid.

Oppo's decision to overhaul the shape of the camera module is commendable because it makes the design of the Find X5 Pro stand out in a sea of cellphones with square, rectangular, and round camera modules.

The power button on the right side of the phone is also accented with a green line. Meanwhile, the volume buttons are placed on the left side of the phone. The bottom of the phone is inhabited by a USB-C port which is flanked by a dual SIM slot and a speaker.

Screen and multimedia

The luxury of the Oppo Find X5 Pro is not only visible on the back but also the screen. Oppo provides this phone with an AMOLED panel measuring 6.7 inches and a resolution of 3216 x 1440 pixels (QHD +).

The screen carries LTPO technology so the refresh rate can vary from 1Hz when displaying static content to 120Hz. The touch sampling rate also reaches 1,000 Hz, so the Find X5 Pro screen can not only display content smoothly but also be ultra responsive.

The Find X5 Pro's display also supports HDR 10+ and can display 1 billion colors thanks to the 10-bit panel and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. The Find X5 Pro's brightness level is claimed to reach 1,300 nits, and in daily use the screen proved bright even under hot sun conditions.

Oppo coated the Find X5 Pro screen with Gorilla Glass Victus as extra protection to prevent unwanted scratches. Not to forget IP68 certification which makes the phone resistant to dust and water.

Like Android flagship phones in general, the Oppo Find X5 Pro has fairly thin bezels on all four sides of the screen. In the upper left corner of the screen there is a small punch hole to place the front camera.

Just like its predecessor, the Find X5 Pro's screen is designed to be slightly curved on the left and right sides. The curve is not so extreme that you don't have to worry about pressing the wrong button when using the phone in landscape mode, for example when playing games or watching videos.

For multimedia connoisseurs, the Find X5 Pro offers one of the best screens in its class. The experience of watching Netflix and YouTube is really satisfying because the colors displayed are bright and pleasing to the eye.

Thanks to HDR 10+ and Widevine L1, Find X5 Pro can be used to watch HDR content on Netflix. Oppo also provides Image Sharpener and Video Color Enhancer options to make the video display in certain applications more prominent.

To support its multimedia features, Oppo includes speakers at the bottom and top of the phone whose quality is very satisfying. There is also Dolby Atmos support which can be activated when the phone is connected to earphones.

Oh yes, the Find X5 Pro also has an under-display fingerprint sensor for an added layer of security. Unfortunately, this sensor is sometimes less responsive when used to unlock the phone so it must be repeated many times.

Interface and operating system

Turning to the interface and operating system, Oppo Find X5 Pro already runs Android 12 wrapped in ColorOS 12.1. The appearance and features are very similar to the Realme UI 3.0. This is understandable considering that these two vendors are in the same group.

Thanks to these features in common, ColorOS 12.1 provides abundant customization options so that Find X5 Pro users can change the appearance of their cellphone as they wish. Starting from changing the color of the phone's theme according to the wallpaper, the color and shape of the application icon, the always on display, and much more.

Oppo also provides features that support user productivity, such as Multi-screen Connect which allows users to access their cellphones via Windows devices. There is also an Air Gesture feature for answering calls or scrolling social media with a wave, which is unfortunately still quite buggy.

Find X5 Pro users can also experience the latest Android and ColorOS updates faster. Currently Find X5 Pro can already try out the beta version of Android 13, and Oppo promises Android updates for up to three generations.

But one of the most disappointing drawbacks of ColorOS 12.1 for the Find X5 Pro is the sheer amount of bloatware, both from third parties and Oppo's own apps.

How not to disappoint, consumers have paid for a flagship phone but still find many unwanted applications. Luckily most of this bloatware can be uninstalled easily and annoying notifications can be silenced.

Performance and battery

Like other 2022 flagship phones, the Oppo Find X5 Pro carries the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. This processor is combined with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory.

The choice of internal memory provided is limited to only 256GB and Oppo also does not provide a microSD slot. To boost the performance of the cellphone, Oppo provides a RAM Expansion feature of up to 7GB, so the total RAM that can be used can reach 19GB.

With these specifications, the Oppo Find X5 Pro can certainly bulldoze all activities smoothly. Multitasking while switching applications can be done smoothly without lag.

Likewise when used to play games, ranging from medium games like PUBG Mobile to games that are quite heavy like Genshin Impact can be played without significant lag. Oppo Find X5 Pro can play PUBG Mobile with Ultra HD graphic quality and Ultra frame rate. While Genshin Impact can be played with High graphics at 60fps.

Although the innards are launched to carry out heavy tasks and games, the body of the Find X5 Pro never overheats which makes the phone uncomfortable to hold. Thanks to the latest cooling system, the temperature of the Find X5 Pro never exceeds 43 degrees Celsius when used to play Genshin Impact.

It's not complete to discuss the performance of the phone without looking at its benchmark score. The following are the results of the Find X5 Pro benchmark which are a little surprising because it is below the average score of its competitors, although in practice its performance is still very fast.

The performance of the Find X5 Pro is supported by a 5,000 mAh battery and 80W fast charging. This battery specification brings a significant improvement from the Find X3 Pro which has a 4,500 mAh battery and 65W fast charging.

Unlike most flagship phones, Oppo still includes a charger head in the Find X5 Pro packaging box. With these features and fast charging technology, the Find X5 Pro can fully charge the battery in about 35-40 minutes. The battery itself can last more than a day even when the screen resolution is increased to 1440p resolution.

Oppo Find X5 Pro is also equipped with a 50W wireless charging feature using accessories that support AirVOOC. This phone can also be used to charge other devices thanks to the 10W reverse wireless charging feature.

Camera

Now it's time to discuss the flagship feature of the Oppo Find X5 Pro, namely the camera. Oppo includes a lot of updates but there is also one unique feature of the Find X3 Pro that was omitted in the Find X5 Pro.

The most touted update is of course Oppo's collaboration with Hasselblad, but don't expect the collaboration of the two to go deep. Hasselblad's contribution to this collaboration is only in the form of additional features such as photo filters, X-Pan mode, and Natural Color Calibration which can be accessed in Pro mode.

Another new feature is the presence of the MariSilicon X chip. This is a neural processing unit (NPU) developed by Oppo to process images and is claimed to optimize video capture with minimal noise in low light conditions.

The Find X5 Pro's own camera specifications have changed slightly compared to its predecessor. This phone is equipped with a main camera and a 50 MP ultra-wide camera which both use the Sony IMX766 sensor.

Both are accompanied by a 13 MP telephoto camera that supports 2x optical zoom and 5x hybrid zoom. The microscope camera feature with up to 60x magnification found in the Find X3 Pro is not carried over to the Find X5 Pro.

The loss of this micro camera may not be so missed by fans of the Oppo Find X series. But it feels like this series has lost one characteristic that makes it unique and stands out from other flagship phones.

Moreover, the zoom range offered by the Find X5 Pro telephoto camera is inferior to the telephoto cameras on competitor phones that have reached 10x optical zoom. The quality is fairly ordinary, even though Oppo is one of the pioneers of cameras with optical zoom.

For the main and ultra-wide cameras, the performance of the Find X5 Pro is very satisfying. The details of the photos taken are very sharp and the color replication is accurate. If you want the color to be more vibrant, you can activate the AI Enhancement Scene when taking photos.

Additional credit should be given to the low-light photo and video capabilities that the Find X5 Pro brings. Even without activating night mode, photos taken in low light conditions still display satisfying details and colors.

Our Opinion

The Find X line is indeed a place for Oppo to bring its latest breakthrough. This time, in Find X5 Pro, the biggest update is of course the MariSilicon X chip and new features in collaboration with Hasselblad. Unfortunately, when compared to the previous Find X line, the updates that the Find X5 Pro brings are less impressive.

For example, Oppo introduced the 60x microscope camera in the Find X3 Pro but then removed it in the Find X5 Pro. Even though it seems gimmick-y, at least this micro camera makes the Find X line look different and unique compared to its competitors.

The telephoto camera in the Find X5 Pro is also fairly modest, with up to 2x optical zoom capability. Not to mention the collaboration features with Hasselblad which are only limited to filters and color calibration.

Fortunately, as a phone that excels in its camera features, the Find X5 Pro is still at the forefront of low-light photography. Taking photos and videos in low light conditions is no longer necessary to use night mode, especially now with the help of the MariSilicon X chip.

Overall, the performance of the Find X5 Pro is also very satisfying when used daily. The battery lasts all day and the 80W SuperVOOC fast charging on offer can also charge lightning fast, perfect for busy users.

The screen and design are also luxurious with a unique camera module shape that makes the Find X5 Pro stand out. Finally, for those of you who are looking for a flagship phone with cutting-edge camera technology, the Find X5 Pro is worth considering.
