NVIDIA did not proceed with the purchase of ARM from Softbank due to objections from various quarters. Many see it as raising the issue of one company controlling the ARM architecture that is important in today’s world of chip manufacturing. In an interview with the Financial Times, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said Qualcomm was interested in buying ARM through a consortium.
With a consortium made up of several other companies, there is no issue that one company will control important technologies owned by ARM. The same idea was once voiced by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger. Apart from Qualcomm, Samsung has also been said to be interested in buying ARM but did not proceed.
