Electric cars have a limited operating distance when compared to fossil fuel cars. Various solutions are being tried such as bigger batteries, faster charging and more aerodynamic cars. Stellantis as the parent company of Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, and Maserati is trying to solve this problem by building a built-in on-road charging system.
The Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWTP) charging system is built-in-road and tested on the Arena Del Futuro circuit located in Italy. It is 1050 meters long with tests showing it is capable of providing a fast charging level on vehicles moving on it wirelessly.
The DWTP charging coil is planted below the road surface with it then covered with a layer of tar. The system is still in the testing stage with there are plans to offer it not only on the road but in parking lots and car charging stations. There have been some similar tests before as the Elecktroad but were found to be too expensive and the charging was not very fast.
