PT Telkom Satellite Indonesia (Telkomsat) has finally opened its voice regarding the possession of the Starilnk satellite anchorage rights from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo).
Kominfo has granted Telkomsat landing rights as a backhaul corporate user in the operation of the closed fixed network of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite.
"Telkom Group sees and welcomes Starlink's presence as a complement to broadband telecommunication business services in Indonesia and can also help accelerate the penetration and distribution of telecommunication services in Indonesia, especially the Business to Business (B2B) market segment," said Telkomsat President Director Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf, Tuesday (14/6/2022).
This Starlink satellite anchoring right is a license for Telkomsat to provide services on an intermediary network that connects Telkom Group's telecommunications backbone infrastructure with Base Transceiver Station towers/ WiFi towers/ access distribution devices via fiber optics.
This service only exists in the operation of a closed fixed network, not for retail services for direct internet access customers.
With the receipt of the Starlink anchorage rights, Telkomsat is increasingly ready to support the equitable distribution program for the development of broadband telecommunications networks in order to reduce the gap in digital services throughout Indonesia.
Lukman said, as an effort to accelerate the environment and digital society in Indonesia, the availability of broadband telecommunications services that is evenly distributed throughout the region is a must, both in urban, suburban and rural areas.
Various technology options available by domestic providers as well as from providers from other countries can be combined to meet the needs of broadband telecommunications in different areas. The use of fixed broadband is mostly to serve urban areas and a small part of suburban areas.
Meanwhile, mobile broadband is available in both urban and suburban areas as well as a small number of rural areas. Meanwhile, rural solutions need to be assisted by satellite broadband, but at a more affordable price.
Lukman said, Telkomsat has made an assessment to synergize with SpaceX. Until finally in the first quarter of 2021, Telkomsat and SpaceX agreed to a duet in the use of Starlink services.
