If last week Western Digital has launched a number of hard drive models with 22TB total storage, Seagate, another leading digital storage brand has announced that they have plans to sell hard drives with 30TB storage in 2023.
Seagate is seen to be developing the second generation HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology which is said to be able to load a higher amount of storage than before, beyond 30TB.
In fact, this second generation HAMR technology is seen to allow Seagate to develop hard drives with a total storage capacity of 50TB in the future. But this does not mean that hard drives with giant storage will be sold in large numbers.
Typically, companies like Seagate will start offering their products to clients such as giant data centers first to be used and tested for durability before they are sold to regular users.
Seagate hard drives with 30TB storage are expected to go on sale to select parties in 2023, while hard drives with larger storage are expected to be introduced in subsequent years (40TB in 2024, 50TB in 2025).
