Meta Sues Epidemic Sound For Allegedly Not Paying Music Royalties On Videos

Music company Epidemic Sound has filed a lawsuit against Meta for allegedly using their music on social media platforms Instagram and Facebook without paying royalties. Epidemic Sound offers the use of background music and special effects sounds on YouTube with users having to pay for a commercial license.

Meta allegedly allowed users to upload videos with audio belonging to Epidemic Sound on their own platforms even though it clearly violated intellectual property. Epidemic Sound is therefore seeking $142 million (~RM632 million) in damages from Meta.

Meta's fault according to Epidemic Sound is allowing users to upload their own audio when using Reels. Audio belonging to Epidemic Sound can be uploaded even if it is not owned by the user. That's why up to 50,000 videos with royalty-free audio are uploaded to Instagram and Facebook every day.
