Online fraud is on the rise with Bukit Aman's Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) saying fraud cases involving almost RM400 million were reported between January and September 2021.
In order to deal with the increasingly serious issue of cyber fraud, Prime Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri announced that the government will create a Cyber Security Awareness Master Plan Development Initiative. This is to increase the level of awareness that is still low among the community about the risk of online fraud
Between 2016 and 2021, a loss of RM 2.21 billion has been recorded so far. In most cases the value of the loss is irrecoverable with the fraudsters getting away with it. This year alone several warnings have been issued by the authorities regarding fraud involving the IRB and various e-commerce companies that promise lucrative income online.
