Apple And Meta Have Talked About Offering Ad-Free Facebook Subscriptions And Sharing Profits From Advertising Payments

Yesterday a report appeared that Meta was still tracking the web surfing habits of users without permission through the web browser built into the iOS version of Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. This allows them to continue to track activity even if the user activates the App Tracking Tranparency (ATT) advertising anti-tracking feature.

Today comes more surprising news from the WSJ which reports that Apple and Meta have discussed offering an ad-free Facebook subscription and sharing a cut of ad payments using the in-app purchase (IAP) feature. Discussions are done between 2016-2019.

Apple will take a cut of between 15-30% for every ad-free Facebook subscription payment made by users. Meanwhile, Apple will also take a 30% deduction from the payment made by users to promote status through the boost feature.

But Apple later decided not to pursue this idea before introducing ATT in April last year to prevent any form of tracking and increase the privacy of their device users. This affects Facebook's revenue up to billions of dollars and they claim that Apple's actions will have a negative impact on businesses that rely on Facebook advertising.
