Cancel Buying Twitter, Elon Musk Wants to Create a New Social Media?

Elon Musk canceled his purchase of Twitter and is now being sued for his decision. Ahead of his inaugural trial against Twitter, Musk indicated that he would launch a new social media platform.

This was revealed when Musk responded to one of his followers who asked if the richest person in the world planned to create his own social media if he failed to buy Twitter.

Musk did not answer the question explicitly. He only answered briefly while giving the site domain X.com without further explanation.

When opened, the X.com site only displays a blank white page with the letter 'x' in the upper left corner of the screen, as quoted from Gizmodo, Thursday (11/8/2022).

The choice of the X.com domain name is actually not without reason. Musk founded online banking service X.com in 1999, before merging with competitor Confinity in 2000.

The new company later changed its name to PayPal in June 2001. Musk then bought the X.com domain from PayPal in 2017 because it had sentimental value and planned to use the domain to cover Musk's other businesses including Tesla and SpaceX.

This X.com teaser comes after Musk sold Tesla shares worth $6.9 billion. Some analysts expect Musk to take this step in preparation for being forced by a court to keep buying Twitter for $44 billion.

This isn't the first time Musk has considered the idea of setting up his own social media. Before announcing his plans to buy Twitter, Musk was once asked by a follower about creating his own social media that has an open source algorithm, prioritizes freedom of speech, and lacks propaganda.

"I'm seriously thinking about this," Musk replied in a tweet in March 2022.
