In the early days of submarines, they were shaped like an egg before the hybrid design of surface ships was used during the First and Second World Wars. With the understanding of science increasing, submarines now have a hull like a jet with an observation tower at the top.
But there is still innovation in the world of submarines. The company Highlands Systems from the UAE is currently building the Kronos submarine which takes its inspiration from the stingray. This submarine has a window in the front allowing the crew to see directly outside the ship while diving. It can also accommodate up to 10 passengers.
Kronos uses a diesel engine which then produces electrical power to an electric motor when operating under the sea surface. Designers say Kronos is capable of diving up to 100 meters with a speed of up to 50 km/h. Above sea level it can reach a speed of 80 km/h. A prototype is being built in the UAE but when testing will begin has not been announced.
