Spain Bans Air Conditioners Set Below 27 Degrees Celsius

Previously, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez encouraged workers not to wear ties to the office as a measure to reduce energy consumption due to high temperatures. Last Tuesday the Spanish government issued an order banning public buildings from setting the temperature of the air conditioning system below 27 degrees Celsius.

The order was given to reduce the use of electricity with the country experiencing a shortage of fossil fuels after the Ukraine-Russia conflict that started last February. Buildings with air conditioning also need to close the door to save electricity consumption. In addition, in winter, the heater temperature cannot be set above 19 degrees Celsius for the same reason.

Air conditioners at home are not affected by the instructions given at this time. Since the start of summer, Spain has recorded a high number of deaths due to heat stroke. The heat wave that hit Europe became serious because most houses were not equipped with fans and air conditioners.
