Steve Jobs has a personal style that is well known. Blue jeans, Nike running shoes and a black turtleneck. This is his image every time he does a product launch. Many may realize that his turtleneck shirt is not just any shirt but designed by Issey Miyake – a leading fashion designer from Japan.
Issey Miyake has died today at the age of 84 from liver cancer. He popularized the use of turtleneck shirts and Steve Jobs became the unofficial ambassador of Issey Miyake products with as many as 100 pieces produced specifically for everyday wear.
Originally, Jobs wanted to use a turtleneck shirt designed by Issey Miyaki as an Apple employee uniform. His idea was rejected and Job made it his personal uniform until the end of his life. It was popular enough that Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes wore the same shirt to look like Jobs.
Despite looking like an ordinary shirt, Issey Miyake turtlenecks sell for over $200 a piece. After the death of Jobs, the sale of this turtleneck was stopped as a sign of respect for the founder of Apple.
