It is now estimated that around 5.3 billion mobile phones will be thrown away in 2022, thus continuing to add to the electronic waste on Earth. This is shared by WEEE (International Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment Forum).
These days, many people keep old phones, rather than recycling them. This at once leads to various components not being recycled, and having to be found new.
There are an estimated 16 billion mobile phones in the world today. In addition to mobile phones, it is also estimated that electronic equipment such as washing machines, computers, GPS devices, etc. will increase to the disposal of around 74 million tons every year by 2030.
For information, only about 17% of this electronic waste is recycled today.
In Malaysia itself, several parties promote the recycling of electronic equipment, including SKMM itself.
