Elizabeth Holmes Sentenced to Almost 12 Years in Prison Over Theranos Scandal

The biomedical company's fraud scandal drew to a close today after the company's founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced to 135 months in prison. This sentence of more than 11 years was imposed because he was found guilty of defrauding Theranos investors.

At the time of its establishment, Holmes said Theranos technology was able to detect various types of patients and see the health level of an individual just by taking a drop of blood. Because this technology was seen as capable of changing the world of medicine, at one point Theranos was valued at $9 billion.

But the detection technology with just a drop of blood Theranos is unable to produce so the company gives inaccurate test results. More critically, there are reports of patients not being able to detect diseases that should be screened until it is too late. Despite being found guilty of defrauding investors, Theranos and Holmes were never found guilty of defrauding customers.
