UK Bans Hikvision And Dahua CCTV Cameras From Sensitive Areas

In addition to the United States, the United Kingdom government also banned the use of closed circuit cameras (CCTV) produced by Hikvision and Dahua from being used in sensitive areas of the country. The measure was taken on the grounds that the equipment of the two companies may be used to spy on behalf of the Chinese government.

The instructions were also given due to the involvement of the two companies in monitoring the lives of the Uyghur ethnic group in Xinjiang. Government bodies that use cameras produced by both companies are asked to consider replacing or removing them directly from the premises. In a report by Big Brother Watch, cameras from the two CCTV giants are used in 73% of councils, 57% of secondary schools, 60% of NHS premises, as well as in universities and police stations across the UK.

Hikvision has rejected UK government claims that it is spying on behalf of the Chinese government as it does not offer cloud storage services or can access customer data.
