Finding life partners through social media has been done since the days of BBS and mIRC. But now with the widespread use of social media, there are security issues for users who want to find the most suitable life partner. Among the serious issues is that services are used by those who are underage.
Meta announced they are testing a feature to verify the age of Facebook Dating users. Users in the United States are now asked to upload an ID card or selfie. The technology developed by Yoti is used by Meta to ensure the real age of the user based on the video sent. The uploaded identification card will be encrypted by Meta to prevent unauthorized use.
This self-video verification feature was tested by Meta on the Instagram platform last October and with the success of the social media, it has now been extended to Facebook Dating. The issue of underage users masquerading as older is quite serious. In Malaysia, the use of matchmaking applications without the knowledge of parents has led to the occurrence of cases of teenagers being raped by friends they have just met.
