Android 13 Covers 5.2% of Devices in Five Months

Google released Android 13 publicly in August 2022. Five months after its release, the latest version of Android has reached 5.2% of devices.

This data comes from 9to5Google, which reports that Android Studio has already received its first update for 2023. Previously, the data was last updated in August 2022, so this data represents the adoption rate of Android 13 for the first time.

Google usually provides monthly updates to developers on how many devices are running a particular version of Android. But in recent years these updates have only been shown in Android Studio.

According to Android Studio data, Android 13 is now running on 5.2% of devices. Adoption of Android 13 is quite low because it is still relatively new and cellphone vendors are distributing updates in stages.

But several Android phone vendors such as Oppo and Samsung have committed to share operating system updates more quickly. So it's not impossible that the Android 13 adoption rate will grow rapidly.

Meanwhile Android 12 and Android 12L are now used on 18.2% of devices, a significant increase from 13.5% in August 2022. Meanwhile, the most widely used variant is Android 11 which runs on 24.4% of devices.

Older versions of Android like Android Oreo 8.0 are finally dropping below 10%. As a reminder, this operating system was first released in 2017, so it is very old.

Android Jelly Bean 4.1, which previously ran on 0.3% of devices, now no longer appears in the list. Meanwhile KitKat 4.4 fell from 0.9% to 0.7%, as quoted from 9to5Google, Sunday (22/1/2023).

Back when Google was still sharing this data through its official website, they took this data based on Android devices that accessed the Google Play Store in a period of one week. While this data is currently only available in Android Studio, it appears that these numbers are still aggregated using similar metrics.

How about you, do you still use Android Jelly Bean or have you upgraded to Android 13?
