Best Devices of 2022 – Editors' Choice

We have already published a list of the best devices of 2022 with a total of 15 smartphones. But we realize the best devices aren't limited to just smartphones. So we asked our editors to pick one of their favorite devices of 2022 that doesn't fall into the smartphone category. Here are our preferred devices.

  Pico 4

There is no doubt that the use of virtual reality headsets in Malaysia is not very widespread. Among the main reasons is that it is not sold in Malaysia officially and imported sets are sold at expensive prices and there is no guarantee. But with the presence of Pico in Malaysia everything changed.

My device of choice this year is something you might not expect, the Pico 4. The country's first official virtual reality headset.

Pico 4 is the best virtual reality headset to date. It comes with a compact design, balanced on the front and back unlike the first generation Oculus Quest I've used, very easy to use, and provides the best user experience with Pico OS 5.0.

Powered by Snapdragon XR2, 8GB RAM memory, internal storage up to 256GB, using a 4K+ screen (2160 x 2160 on each lens), 90Hz refresh rate, equipped with 6 DoF sensors for tracking, and the coolest – a color see-through mode that can distinguish the real world and the virtual world.

Using this Pico 4 reminds me of the movie Ready Player One. When playing, I almost forgot I was in a virtual world. It doesn't matter if it's action games, exercise or sports, even if I want to draw, there's no problem. The sale price starting at RM1699 is one of the most worthwhile expenses if you want to enjoy the experience of using a VR headset that you will definitely not regret.

  Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2

The Huawei brand for the smartphone segment may no longer be the primary choice of consumers at this time. But that doesn't mean there aren't any interesting things with the products produced by him. For example, like the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 which is my device of choice this year. I'm not a true audiophile but I'm still quite picky when it comes to earphone comfort. For me, in-ear earphones are more satisfying, due to their design that will completely block the ear canal. So the noise from the outside will be successfully prevented from polluting the hearing.

Once during a flight from Thailand to Malaysia, I used the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 as a companion throughout the trip and it worked quite effectively. Especially when I use the ability of the ANC system at the Ultra level which is effectively able to filter the roar of the airplane engine to slow down. This is more interesting because the ability to filter does not result in 'deafness' in the ears.

There's also a Dynamic level where Huawei developed an algorithm that uses the microphone on the FreeBuds to actively identify surrounding sounds, then dynamically adjust noise cancellation in real time. As well as using it in the office, these earphones really help me to focus fully while working. The user experience is even more interesting with the audio support tuned by Devialet which is well known as a company that is indeed an expert in the field of audio technology.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 also facilitates use with the support of a number of controls that can be changed and accessed through a variety of devices including HarmonyOS, Android, iOS and Windows. However, this good user experience must be through the Huawei AI Life application which must be downloaded first through the Google Play Store, Huawei App Gallery and the App Store.

The added support of tracking lost ear buds (Find My Earphone) has also added value compared to the previous generation. With its small size, the feature makes it very easy for me to retrace this location if lost or dropped. Overall, this is why the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 is my best device of the year

  ASUS ROG SWIFT PG42UQ

The year 2022 is a year in which the supply of entertainment electronic devices such as smart televisions, gaming computers and even video game consoles are all suddenly in terms of demand.

My favorite device pick this year is the latest display from ASUS, the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG42UQ. This screen display uses a 41.5-inch OLED screen display with 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate that also supports HDR color processing technology and also Variable Refresh Rate which helps in ensuring that the latest game consoles can display the best graphics processing.

The size of 42 inches may feel too big at first, but after getting used to it and also the modification in terms of position, I now really understand what is meant by an immersive or deep gaming and entertainment experience.

If you have a powerful gaming computer, or the latest generation of game consoles such as Sony PlayStation 5 or Microsoft Xbox Series X, I would say that this ASUS ROG SWIFT PG42UQ display is the best display to maximize the performance of your computer and console at the same time, with the support of several built-in HDMI 2.1 plug.

Not only that, if you're the lazy type who wants to install speakers for a desk setup that doesn't take up that much space, this screen display also comes with built-in speakers that I'd say are on par with premium smart television offerings out there.

  Samsung The Wall 146-Inch

I love unique, expensive and exclusive devices. The Samsung The Wall that I had the chance to use while in Bangkok falls into this category because it is a giant smart television with a 146-inch screen with a resolution of 4K 120Hz. I say reach because actually The Wall is a modular TV system that changes in size according to the customer's needs.

A small panel can be assembled into a giant panel with the screen ratio also changing according to the user's wishes. With Micro LED technology, it's the most extreme television I've used and reviewed so far. This panel supports HDR10+ content and can be used by gamers for video game sessions up to 120Hz.

The new Wall is also finally equipped with built-in speakers and all built-in systems unlike previous models. Through the Tizen OS operating system, a variety of key and necessary applications can be downloaded along with built-in Samsung SmartThings internet of things support.

The disappointing thing is that you cannot buy this television through Seng Heng, Court Mammoth or Samsung's official store. It is only offered to business and corporate customers. Therefore, we don't know the selling price either, only that it is confirmed to reach six figures. With Samsung The Wall the dream of having a private cinema at home will come true if you can afford it. Because it's the most extreme TV I've ever seen and used, The Wall is my pick for the best device of 2022.
