The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has officially sued Google for allegedly monopolizing digital advertising in the United States. This is done through acquisitions of advertising technology companies, and manipulating advertising auctions which are anti-competitive.
Google is also accused of forcing customers to use their platform over a competitor's platform. Through the manipulation of advertising auctions, the DOJ claims that Google is protecting itself from competitors. According to the DOJ, this practice has been going on for 15 years.
The DOJ wants to seek damages on behalf of consumers in the United States and federal agencies that overpaid for Google's advertising services at an undetermined amount.
Google has released an official statement refuting all the DOJ's allegations by giving examples of advertising on TikTok and Amazon that increased. The compulsion to use their platform is also denied with Google saying they are the customer's choice because it is the most effective platform.
