Apple launched the 14″ Mac Mini and MacBook Pro with the new M2 Pro chip last week. Typically new products offer better performance than previous models. But according to reports from MacRumors and 9to5Mac, both the most basic models of the Mac Mini and the new 14″ MacBook Pro are equipped with slower SSDs than last year's models with the same storage size.
Write speeds on the Mac Mini M2 256GB and MacBook Pro 14″ M2 Pro 512GB were found to be around 3.2GBps compared to 3.9GBps on the same model last year. The read speed is down to 2.97 GBps compared to 4.90 GBps in last year's model. This is due to the use of SSD storage with less amount of NAND. This will reduce the performance of the computer's SSD.
This is not the first time that a slower SSD has been used in a new model as it also happened in last year's most basic MacBook Air M2 256GB and MacBook Pro 13 M2 256GB models. For those who plan to buy Mac Mini M2 and MacBook Pro 14″ M2 Pro this year, please choose the model with larger storage if you want faster SSD performance.
