Doomsday Clock Closer, Remaining 90 Seconds Towards Destruction

The doomsday clock or doomsday clock is almost touching midnight, which means that the destruction of the Earth is getting closer according to scientists' calculations. The remaining time to 'Earth's destruction' is estimated to be only 90 seconds, the closest time ever recorded in history.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist is the one who founded this clock in 1947. The institute was built by Albert Einstein and students of Chicago University. Of course this does not mean that this is the real time leading to the apocalypse, rather this clock is a symbol of the potential destruction of the Earth due to a lot of damage.

The first time, the clock is set 17 minutes to midnight. However, as the Earth's destruction increases due to many things (nuclear hazard, disinformation, to climate change), the needle is getting closer to the number 12.

"We at Bulletin believe that because humans make these threats, they also have the ability to mitigate them," said Dr Rachel Bronson, President and CEO of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist.

Every year, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientist will analyze the state of the Earth based on two things. First, is humanity safer than last year? Second, has humanity been safer over the last 76? This then determines the position at 2023.

Observed for the position of the clock in 2023, there are several things that cause the clock hands to get closer to midnight. Among them, there is the Russian-Ukrainian invasion, climate change, to the pandemic which is still having an impact. Governments in most countries are considered to have not succeeded in creating proper regulations in dealing with the problem.

According to existing records, the longest distance between the doomsday clock was 17 minutes in 1991. This happened when the President of the United States (US) George Bush and the President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev announced the reduction of nuclear weapons in each country. Thus launched IFL Science, Wednesday (25/1/2023).
