A company as big and flashy as Google has just laid off 12,000 employees. Quite a number of Google employees who were laid off were shocked, especially when some of them had high performance, but they still got hit.
One of them is Chris McDonald who is a Senior Software Engineer at Google. Everything he said all of a sudden. He was emailed a layoff notice at dawn and 20 minutes later, he was immediately disconnected from the company system.
Chris, who has been working at Google for 4 years, happened to wake up at 03.00 in the morning and check his email idly. He was surprised to be told he was no longer working at Google. "I was quite shocked, at first I felt this was a mistake," he said.
We quoted from MSN, Wednesday (25/1/2023) a few moments later, he could no longer access email or anything else. "Even though I feel like an employee with good work. I was promoted a year ago. I like my team. I am passionate about my job so this is really surprising," he explained.
McDonald said his manager and his boss had no idea why he was being laid off and it came as a shock to them. Google's way of doing layoffs, he said, was painful and disappointing.
McDonald's has been happy with working conditions at Google and is pessimistic about whether it will find a similar work environment again in the future. His team also understands him, which makes him even more comfortable.
But now he has been dismissed. McDonald also advised that this kind of situation could happen to anyone. "I hope this is a call to the people who don't get hit and don't get laid off. It could happen to you," he said.
