CRRC launched the world's fastest hydrogen cell train that can reach a speed of 160 km/h. China's first hydrogen cell train can run up to 600 km before running out of fuel with four carriages.
It overtakes the Coradia iLint train by Alstom which started official operations in Germany last year after being tested since 2018. The Coradia iLint travels at a speed of 140 km/h but can operate for a distance of 1000 km using hydrogen cells.
The launch of hydrogen cell trains in China is a step to reduce chronic pollution in the country. The increasing cost of batteries makes hydrogen cell vehicles one of the developed alternatives. When operating, the hydrogen cell train only emits water vapor without any gases that pollute the air.
