Sony's claim some time ago regarding the PlayStation 5 (PS5), which is no longer rare, is proven by its skyrocketing sales.
During the last three months at the end of 2022, Sony sold 7.1 million PS5 units, an increase from the 3.9 million units they sold in the same period a year earlier, we were quoted as saying from GSM Arena, Friday (3/2/2023).
The increase in PS5 sales boosted their Games & Network Services division's revenue to 1,246 billion yen, up from 813 billion yen a year earlier, or an increase of 53%.
In total, Sony has sold 32.1 million PS5 units since its launch. Their target is to sell 37 million PS5 units by the end of their fiscal year, which ends in March 2023.
Although PS5 sales have increased, the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has decreased but the number of active monthly users has increased. Then Sony's games also increased, for example God of War Ragnarok which has sold 11 million copies since its release.
However, there is also bad news from Sony, because they are said to have reduced their PSVR2 sales target by almost half, because the number of customers did not meet expectations.
The Japanese company originally expected to ship two million PSVR2 units in one quarter, but has now brought that number down to one million units. PSVR2 itself will only be released to the public on February 22.
The reservation period for the VR headset has been open since last November 2022, and until now many shops are still accepting orders for the headset without waiting lists, even though the product will be released in the near future.
This is in stark contrast to the PlayStation 5, which has even experienced a long scarcity, or the Meta Quest 2 VR headset, which has made it difficult for Meta to meet market demand for these headsets.
