Tens of millions of years ago, the earth was inhabited by large dinosaurs. In this era, giant-sized animals ruled the world because humans did not yet exist. Since time immemorial the largest animal record has been held by the sauropod family such as Brachiosaurus. Now scientists have confirmed the animal with the longest neck in history belongs to Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum which is a species of sauropod.
Mamenchisaurus fossils were found in China in 1987. After scientists from Stony Brook University, London Natural History Museum, Yunnan University and the Zigong Dinosaur Museum studied some of the fossils found and looked at the evolutionary history of the Mamenchisaurus family, they said the neck of this dinosaur could reach 15.1 meters. This easily eclipses the longest neck record held by Sauroposeidon which is believed to be around 12 meters.
The neck of Mamenchisaurus was more than six times longer than the neck of a modern giraffe. Despite its gigantic size, Mamenchisaurus was a herbivore with a small head. It lived during the middle Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods (114-174 million years ago).
