MIT – AI Workers Are More Expensive Than Humans

The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) changed the landscape of digital work production and caused many layoffs in the first wave of implementation of this technology in the workplace. There are already recommendations for the government to enforce laws to prevent humans from being replaced by AI before it's too late. According to a recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), replacing humans with AI is more expensive than expected.

In the published report, they conducted a study on the specific tasks that require vision. Only 23% of jobs requiring this vision were found to be worthwhile for AI to replace humans. This is because the cost of developing AI itself and maintaining it is still high.

The impact of AI on the human employment sector is not as serious as initially thought. Even if the cost of using AI were to decrease by 20% annually, the impact on human workers would take decades.

At this point we can already see the subscription cost of AI services offered by Google Cloud and OpenAI and it must be admitted that it is still expensive for small companies to use. What is certain is that the work done by humans will be replaced by AI in the future. Industries need to prepare for the changes that will occur and humans also need to look ahead to avoid themselves entering the careers most easily replaced by AI.
