Shopee Starts Showing 10% Sales Tax Notification For Imported Goods Priced Below RM500

In line with the start of the new year 2024, Shopee has now started displaying notifications on goods priced below RM500 sent from abroad to the local market, where a 10% sales tax will be charged on them.

Through our observation of a number of listings on Shopee, the calculated price appears to have included a 10% sales tax for the item, before payment is made – especially for items shipped directly from China.

The government has previously announced the enforcement of a 10% sales tax charge for goods under RM500 that are purchased online and shipped directly from overseas. This step will simultaneously ensure that the country does not lose income, as well as protect local sellers to be able to continue to compete well with overseas sellers through top-line platforms
