Malaysia topped the Open Data Inventory (ODIN) chart published yesterday. Malaysia was given a score of 90, which is higher than the average score of 79 for 198 global countries. In addition to this overall score, Malaysia also received a score of 99 in terms of openness of shared data.
Despite being ranked first overall, Malaysia is ranked sixth in terms of data coverage shared. Malaysia received full marks for data sharing on population, agriculture and land use, resource use, international trade, finance and banking, and balance of payments.
However, data on food security and nutrition, gender statistics, crime and justice, health outcomes, energy and pollution can still be improved. Sharing data openly not only facilitates inter-agency planning but also demonstrates government transparency as it is accessible to anyone. The OpenDOSM initiative launched two years ago makes it easier to access a variety of open data locally.
