Microsoft today ended the popular video calling service Skype after buying it 14 years ago. The announcement was made by Microsoft last year that the service would be terminated on May 5, 2025 with Skype users given a 10-week period to migrate their various data to Microsoft Teams.
The termination of Skype operations has been predicted by many for many years, especially after Microsoft Teams was launched. Among the steps that have been taken are reducing Skype updates and the introduction of new features is also decreasing.
Before 2020, Skype was a teleconferencing application with over 200 million monthly users with it holding around 32% of the market. But during the pandemic Zoom and Google Meet became the choice because of their ability to accommodate more users. Before being terminated, Skype had around 40 million monthly users.
