The government through the National Council for Local Government has now announced that all shopping centres are required to provide recycling facilities in their respective buildings, effective 1 January 2026.
Any shopping centre that does not have a recycling facility will not be granted a business license by the Local Authority.
This new measure is seen as in line with efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, as well as being a proactive effort in waste management in Malaysia.
Along with this, it is also worth sharing that the court can now issue a community service order for the offence of dumping small amounts of waste in public places – by anyone.
