Four years ago, Meta showed off a concept wristband that could read brain signals that could then be used to control computers. This electromyography (EMG) technology was developed at the time to allow virtual reality users to interact with their virtual worlds without the usual physical controls. We are now in 2025 and this wristband technology has been enhanced with several new features.
The wristband can now read signals sent by muscles to control devices. Among the demos shown was detecting finger movements without using a camera as required by Meta Quest. It is also accurate enough to detect finger movements that are then converted into handwriting.
Because it reads brain and muscle signals, it can control the level of grip strength of objects in the virtual world, for example. Previously, EMG technology allowed games like Subway Surfer to be controlled with fingers without touching the screen.
Meta's wristband has already been used to control Meta Orion mixed reality (MR) glasses. Meta Orion is expected to be launched next year as a replacement for Ray-Ban Meta. Perhaps in the near future, Zuckerberg's dream of replacing the iPhone with smart glasses will finally become a reality.
