Is generative artificial intelligence (AI) good enough to produce special effects that look realistic? The answer may be after Netflix revealed that they have already started using generative AI in the series The Eternauts. This was revealed by CEO Ted Sarandos where AI was used to produce the visual of a collapsed building in Buenos Aires in this Netflix series.
According to Sarandos, generative AI is used because it saves costs for special effects that were previously beyond the capabilities of professionals. He added that generative AI can also produce these special effects 10 times faster than traditional techniques.
Eyeline Studios is involved in producing special effects using generative AI as it is a subsidiary of Netflix that is testing more innovative film and series production. Current generative AI already has much better and more realistic capabilities than just a year ago. Disney, for example, was criticized a year ago for using AI to generate animation for Secret Invasion which looked bad.
In Malaysia it has been used to produce KRU music videos and successfully deceived Facebook users about the existence of cable cars in Perak to the point that the Ministry of Communications now wants AI videos to be clearly labelled.
