PSSR Upscaling Technology to Be Replaced by AMD FSR 4 on PlayStation 5 Pro Next Year

Last year, Sony launched the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro console as an upgrade to their original Sony PlayStation 5 console, which featured the ability to run games with greater graphic detail, and high resolutions with higher and more stable refresh rates, thanks to the upgraded processor chip used, as well as the PlayStation Spectral Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology.

Recently, through an interview with Tom’s Guide, Mark Cerny, the chief architect of the Sony PlayStation 5, confirmed that PSSR will be replaced by another upscaling technology, AMD Fidelity Super Resolution 4, next year.

This was technically reported earlier this year, but previously, we said that PSSR would receive an update to support FSR 4 technology, and not be completely replaced by the technology.

This is possible because of the Project Amethyst collaboration initiated by AMD and Sony, specifically through the RDNA 2 chip that fully supports AMD graphics technology, unlike what is used in the PlayStation 5.

Technically, the transition from using PSSR technology to FSR 4 means that the PlayStation 5 Pro will appear to show resolution enhancement features equivalent to what is shown on a computer that takes advantage of the technology, such as playing games at 4K resolution and high refresh rates, lower input lag from controllers and sharper graphics processing.

Not only that, Mark Cerny's statement regarding the implementation of FSR 4 on the PlayStation 5 Pro may also mean that previous AMD Radeon graphics cards, such as the AMD Radeon RX 7950XT and others may be able to support RDNA 4 technology in the future, which is currently only supported on the AMD Radeon RX 9000 series of graphics cards.

He also said that all the observations made through Project Amethyst can be utilized by AMD in their upcoming series of graphics cards, which may be called RDNA 5 or UDNA.

For now, Mark Cerny has not yet confirmed when the PlayStation 5 Pro will receive the FSR 4 technology upgrade, but has promised that it will arrive in 2026.
