Sony’s New CFexpress Type-A Storage Shows 1800MB/s Data Read Speed

If you’re a professional photographer, or have a deep hobby for photography activities, you’re definitely familiar with the CFexpress storage format. It was introduced around 2020 as a way to showcase a small-sized storage offering that still comes with large storage amounts and faster data transfer speeds.

The CFexpress format comes in three options, Type-A, Type-B and Type-C, but for this article, the focus is on the CFexpress Type-A card, which Sony has updated its storage offering with support for the fastest CFexpress 4.0 data transfer technology to date.

Where their previous CFexpress CEA-G Type-A card offering came with storage options of 80GB to 320GB and data read and transfer speeds of 800MB/s and 700MB/s. Their latest Sony CFexpress Type-A storage card comes in two much larger storage options, namely 960GB and 1920GB with data read and write speeds of 1800MB/s and 1700MB/s.

The advantages of using CFexpress Type-A storage can be seen through the support in terms of storage slots present on the camera. CFexpress Type-A uses the same pin arrangement as an SD card, but as seen, comes with a much higher amount of storage and data read speed, suitable for cameras recording video at high resolutions and bit rates.

For this latest Sony CFexpress storage, it is seen as suitable for use with camera series such as Sony FX, Sony A9 MkIII and Sony A7 MkV.

This latest Sony CFexpress storage is expected to arrive in selected markets around August 2025, at a price of $584.99 for the 960GB model and $949.99 for the 1920GB model.
