13th Malaysia Plan: Government to Consider Using Nuclear Energy as a Clean Energy Source

During the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan today, Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government is seen considering the use of nuclear energy as one of the clean energy sources.

This idea was previously raised by the government, but former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad decided not to proceed with the plan in 2018.

Latest, Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim said that this nuclear energy development program will be supervised by MyPower Corp, which will use the technology development framework introduced by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The nuclear energy development program for electricity generation as a clean energy source in the country’s energy mix will be implemented and is expected to begin operations in 2031. MyPower will coordinate the implementation of the communication, education and public awareness (CEPA) program, investment in new infrastructure, strengthening research and development (R&D) and expert training, as well as international cooperation on nuclear energy.

Not many details are known about this plan at this time, but it appears to be part of the government's plan to introduce new clean energy sources, rather than to replace existing sources of electricity.
