Goodbye Boeing 737, hello Airbus A320 as it is set to overtake the 737 as the most produced commercial passenger aircraft. According to data published by Cirium, as of early August 2025, 12,175 Boeing 737 series have been produced compared to 12,153 Airbus A320 series.
This figure recorded by Airbus is amazing because the A320 only began production in 1988 compared to the 737 which was produced in 1967. With a difference of only 22 units, the record for the most produced passenger aircraft will pass to Airbus as early as September.
Despite being launched earlier, the Airbus A320 managed to overtake the Boeing 737 due to various issues faced by Boeing. Among them are the incidents involving the 737 MAX series which crashed due to the aircraft's control system and then the Alaska Air emergency door being torn off last year. Boeing's safety record has come under scrutiny, leading airlines to choose the A320.
With the increasingly anti-US political landscape, orders for Boeing aircraft have also been cancelled by countries such as India in protest at Trump's high tariffs. In Malaysia, the Boeing 737 is synonymous with Malaysia Airlines, while the Airbus A320 is synonymous with Air Asia.
