Believe it or not, the country that introduced internet technology to the whole world, the United States, still uses narrowband internet connections (dial-up). There are several companies that still offer this service for those living in remote areas, but the number of subscribers is seen to be quite low.
AOL, the operator of internet networks and various online services in the United States, has recently announced that they will end their narrowband internet offerings at the end of September 2025.
AOL has offered this internet service since 1991, and for 34 years has maintained it as the world has moved to much faster broadband and fiber optic connections. In fact, today it can be seen that mobile internet connections have also left behind the slow internet speeds.
In addition to ending the internet connection offering, AOL has also confirmed that they will no longer offer two other software services, namely AOL Dialer and the AOL Shield web browser, which were developed specifically to make it easier for older computers to connect to the internet network.
Malaysia has already ended the 1515 and other narrowband internet offerings since October 2017 through Telekom Malaysia, whereby residents in Malaysia now all enjoy fast internet connections via fiber optics and 4G and 5G mobile networks.
