Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil objected to the decision of the social media company TikTok to appoint a former Israeli soldier as content manager, focusing on sensitive and hateful content. The appointment of the former soldier himself is seen as likely to lead to changes in the algorithm and control the type of content displayed through the social platform.
The Minister said that he had contacted the CEO of TikTok himself, and also conveyed his initial objections regarding this matter. However, it is said that TikTok emphasized that the appointment has nothing to do with the Palestinian issue. Fahmi said that he was concerned that this appointment would open up space for pro-Zionist content and influence TikTok's algorithm for Malaysian users.
In addition, Fahmi also questioned TikTok's actions in terminating many employees, including in Malaysia, in line with the transition in the use of artificial intelligence for content monitoring. The Minister is expected to meet TikTok and the PDRM in early September 2025 for further clarification regarding this.
