HBO Max Will Also Start Chasing Customers Who Share Their Account Passwords

Not all good things last forever. While streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have been preventing their customers from sharing accounts with multiple users, it seems HBO Max is set to do the same.

In a recent earnings call with investors, JB Perrette, head of streaming and gaming at Warner Bros Discovery, said that HBO Max will begin an anti-password sharing campaign starting in September 2025.

The company is expected to shut down the ability for customers to “share” their accounts by the end of the year, a few months after the anti-sharing campaign. He also said that WBD has already figured out a way to make sure they know who their real customers are and who they aren’t.

According to him, at the beginning of the campaign, users will receive pop-up messages asking them to subscribe to their own accounts that they can close, and in the coming months, these messages will become more aggressive, and may be harder to delete.

JB Perette expects that with this move, it is hoped that HBO Max will be able to further increase the number of subscribers to the streaming service by the end of this year or early next year.

HBO Max is offered in Malaysia in two tiers, namely Standard (RM23.30 per month, RM279.9 per year) and Premium (RM52.9 per month, RM424.9 per year).
