One of the issues that often plagues motor vehicles in Malaysia is the need to stop at toll plazas to pay tolls. This is seen to be worse when it comes to big celebrations such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Chinese New Year.
Now, PLUS Malaysia has announced that they will be testing a barrier-free toll payment system using the Automated Number Plate Registration (ANPR) system starting mid-year this year. This ANPR technology or automatic car number plate detection is a system that has already been introduced in many shopping malls in Malaysia to simplify and speed up the payment process when they want to exit the car park.
Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works said that PLUS has been developing and testing the ANPR toll payment system privately for the past year, and will begin testing more openly, with a select group of members of the public around September or October 2025.
This “open” trial will involve about 13 toll plazas and around 30-35 TnG RFID toll lanes along the North-South Expressway. Users will need to download and register their vehicles and payment details on the JustGO Digital application which is also developed by PLUS Malaysia itself.
PLUS Malaysia also said that they will open this ANPR toll payment service to the public in the future, but so far, has not given any specific timeframe on when it will be offered.
The Minister of Works further said that this ANPR system trial is part of the government’s move to introduce the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll payment system to facilitate and speed up the payment of tolls for vehicles without barriers, similar to what is currently being used in Singapore with the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) toll system.
He said that the government is working to introduce this MLFF toll payment system more widely on more roads and highways throughout Malaysia by 2027.
